European Cleaning and Facility Management Industry
The cleaning sector in Europe
The industrial cleaning sector in Europe represents one of the most important business service industries and satisfies one of the fundamental needs of our society: hygiene and cleanliness.
Industrial cleaning is a dynamic area of corporate services. On average, the annual turnover growth in the industry over the last 22 years is at 9,3 % and the annual employment growth at 4,1 %. The sector has grown steadily and sustainably during the last 20 years, due notably to the continued outsourcing of services (estimates show that in all European countries, the market penetration increased from 43 % in 1989 to 65 % in 2014).
Office cleaning represents half of the industrial cleaning market in Europe, which includes specialities such as hygiene of food chains, specialised cleaning services, facade and window-cleaning and the cleaning of schools. They all involve the use of sophisticated equipment as well as specific training for employees.
The diversification of activities towards integrated services and facility management is now a reality in all EU member states. The facility management focuses on the provision of support services for organisations, such as catering, transportation, gardening, technical maintenance activities, reception and laundry services among others.
